Churches and Places of General Public Interest

The Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Anne. Building commenced 1808. Damaged by fire 1820. Interior re-modelled in 1828 by Pain. Presbytery contains records of baptisms and marriages from 1748. Link to relevant section of the map

St. Finbar's South. Built in 1766. It contains old and new architecture. South trassscept being built in 1809 contains a statue of the dead Christ by Hogan.Link to relevant section of the map

St. Mary's (Dominican) Church. Built in 1838 Designed by Kearns Deane. Holds 14th century figurine. Link to relevant section of the map

St. Patrick's . Built in 1836. Designed by George Pain. Corinthian style of architecture. The Church was extended in 1894. Link to relevant section of the map

Christ the King Church. Built in the modem idiom. Designed by the American, Barry Byrne. The figure of Christ the King surmounting the doorway was designed by the American sculptor Storrs. Link to relevant section of the map

Honan Chapel. Built in 1915. Designed in Hiberno-Romanesque style by James McMullan. Decoration and furnishings are gems in artistic work. The stained glass windows are by Harold Clarke and Sarah Purser. Link to relevant section of the map

S.S. Peter and Paul's. Built about 1866 regarded as one of Pugins best Gothic works. This Church will always be associated with one of Cork's most romantic ecclesiastical figures Fr. John Murphy. Link to relevant section of the map

St. Finbar's Cathedral. Built In 1867. Designed by William Burgess in French pointed Gothic style. Link to relevant section of the map


St. Anne's Church ShandonSt. Anne's Shandon. Built between 1722 and 1726. The peal of bells set up in 1750 have been immortalised in the poem - "The Bells of Shandon". In the adjoining churchyard is the Green Coat Hospital founded in 1584. Link to relevant section of the map

St. Nicholas. Built in 1850. The Church contains a beautiful example of sculptor's work in the tracton monument by John Bacon, R.A. Link to relevant section of the map

St. Luke's. The third Church built on this site. The present Church built in 1889 was designed by W. Hill.Link to relevant section of the map

Holy Trinity Church. This church was commissioned in 1834 by "the Apostle of Temperance" Father MathewIt was deseigned by the Pain brothers.Link to relevant section of the map

 

Notable Public Buildings

The Custom House. Built in 1818 to the design of William Hardgrave. Link to relevant section of the map

The Old Market. Cornmarket Street. The lower portion of the facade is early 18th century in design. Link to relevant section of the map

The Mercy Hospital. Formerly the Mansion House. The latter was built in 1767 and was Designed by Davies Ducart. Link to relevant section of the map

The Court House. Built in 1835 and designed by the brothers Pain. The original interior was destroyed by fire in 1891.Link to relevant section of the map

Tower of Red Abbey. Last remaining link of medieval Cork. The Abbey was an Augustinian Priory founded in the 12th Century. Link to relevant section of the map

Elizabeth Fort. The first fort on this spot was built during the reign of Elizabeth I. Demolished in 1603, and promptly rebuilt. Has been used as a prison and military barracks in its time. Now largely disused; part of it is used as a Garda Station. Link to relevant section of the map

University College. Founded in 1845. Original buildings designed by Sir Thomas Deane and completed in 1848. The west wing was destroyed by fire in 1862. The science laboratories were designed by the architect Hill. The college contains a fine library and an important collection of Ogham Stones. Link to relevant section of the map

Firkin Crane House. Circular building of comparatively modern origin. Built on the site of Shandon Castle which had been the nerve centre of English rule in Munster for centuries.Link to relevant section of the map

The Cork Savings Bank. (TSB) Built in 1842,designed by Kearns Deane. Link to relevant section of the map

Blackrock Castle. Built in early 19th Century to a design of the brothers Pain. Built on the site of an old 17th Century fort. Link to relevant section of the map

Dundanion Castle(in ruins). William Penn set sail for America from this Castle in 1669. Link to relevant section of the map

City Hall. Original building burned in 1920. Re-built in 1936.Link to relevant section of the map

Cork Public MuseumCork Public Museum. Fitzgerald Park. Houses a collection illustrating the growth of Cork from Prehistoric times.Link to relevant section of the map

Cork Butter Museum Cork Butter Museum, The Tony O'Reilly Centre, O'Connell Square, Cork. The Cork Butter Museum tells one of the great success stories of Ireland, the butter trade. Located in the historic Shandon area of Cork city, the story begins with the central role of dairy culture in the Island of Saints and Scholars. The Museum goes on to describe the internationally important Butter Exchange in nineteenth century Cork, the traditional craft of home butter making and the modern success of the Kerrygold brand. In the course of this story, the commercial, social, and domestic life of Ireland is recalled.

Art Galleries

The Crawford Art Gallery.Buildings added to the former 18th Century Custom House and altered accordingly. The Art Gallery is open to the public.
Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm.

Cork Archives Institute, formerly Christ Church or Holy Trinity Church. Built in 1726 and designed by Coltsman, the ceiling is supported by twelve ionic pillars of scagliola. The poet Spencer is said to have been married in this Church.
