Cork City Council launched the new Cork City Development Plan 2004 - 2009 on Thursday 3rd of June in the Council Chambers in the City Hall. The Plan was made by Council during their meeting of the 8th December, 2003 replacing the existing Cork City Development Plan Review 1998.
The Plan is the result of two years of research and preparation by the City Planning Department. The production of the Plan followed a rigorous timetable laid down by Section 12 (10) of the Planning & Development Act 2000.
Cork City Council carried out intensive public consultation on issues to be included in the Plan. Exhibitions were held around the city in March of 2002 and February of 2003. Submissions and observations were invited from the public during this time. Several submissions from community associations, private enterprise and the public in general helped to shape the final Plan.
The Cork City Development Plan 2004 – 2009 sets out Cork City Council’s policies for the development of Cork City to late 2009. The Plan will set the framework to guide the development of the City in the future. The City Centre, Docklands, Mahon and Blackpool are identified as the main areas for new development. A considerable amount of development is already underway in the city centre, Mahon, Blackpool and in the major educational and health institutions in the city, with applications and pre-planning discussions underway for a number of developments in Docklands. This will be complimented by major environmental improvements such as the renewal of St. Patrick’s Street and the Shandon area in time for Corks term as the European Capital of Culture 2005. The development of suburban rail services and upgraded bus transport facilities with the new ‘Green Routes’ are also an essential component of the Plan.
The Plan is set within the framework established by the Cork Area Strategic Plan 2001 – 2020 (CASP). It has been prepared having regard to relevant National Plans, policies and guidelines. The City Manager said ‘ the Plan outlines Cork City Council’s policies for improving the social, economic, cultural and environmental health of the city’.
The three main goals of the Plan are, to promote sustainable development of Cork as a Gateway City, promote social inclusion and to provide high quality natural and built environment. The City Manager said ‘ he is committed to implementing these policies during the life of the Plan’.
Copies of the Plan are available for inspection at the Planning & Development Directorate, Navigation House, Albert Quay, at the City Library, Grand Parade and other branch libraries. A copy of the Plan can be purchased at the Planning & Development Directorate for €50. It is also to be made available in CD format (5 Euro).
