The contract for the development of the 90,000 square foot new civic offices for Cork City Council was signed today at City Hall. The contract, worth in excess of €30 million was awarded to the Cleary Doyle Group following a public tender process earlier this year. Preliminary site works have already commenced at the Anglesea Street site.
When completed the state of the art new complex will house the majority of the City Council’s departments allowing customers to access all the Council’s services at one location. The new building will be linked to the existing City Hall by two flying corridors at first floor level.
City Manager, Joe Gavin, who spearheaded the project said, “These offices are designed and will be built to the highest standards. The design is architecturally innovative and the building itself will incorporate the highest environmentally acceptable systems including its heating being sourced from underground thermal springs. The facility of having almost all of the Council’s services available in a one-stop-shop format shows the Council’s commitment to serving our customers better.” “We are also very pleased,” he continued, “to have entered a partnership with a company of Cleary Doyle’s standing for the delivery of this most important project for Cork”.

Designed by ABK architects the new buildings will occupy the area where the City Hall Car Park and the Old Eglinton Street Baths originally stood. The Building will feature a glass and stone frontage with a floor to ceiling atrium in the reception area. Following a lengthy public consultation period the City Council gave the go ahead for the development at its meeting on 26th July, 2004. The contract period is 22 months and it is expected that the facility will be fully operational within 2 months of the completion date.
A model of the new complex will be on display to the general public at the City Hall reception area from next Monday 29th November, 2004.
