On Saturday November 12th 2005, another event took place as part of the Lagan to the Lee initiative. This time the emphasis was on sport where teams from Belfast travelled to Cork to compete in a number of sporting disciplines, namely; rugby, ladies soccer, hurling and 5-Aside Special Olympics soccer.

The Special Olympics 5-Aside Soccer Team from Belfast who defeated the Cork Team in the Lagan to the Lee Sports Challenge held in the Mardyke Arena on Saturday, November 12th 2005.
The teams from Belfast were St. John’s (GAA), Harlequins and CIYMS (Rugby), the u-18 Northern Ireland Development Squad (Ladies soccer) and the Belfast Special Olympics Team (5-Aside Soccer).

The Cork teams were St. Finbarr’s (GAA), Midleton (Rugby), Lakewood Athletic FC (Ladies Soccer) and Cork Special Olympics Team (5-Aside Soccer).
The Sports Challenge took place in the Mardyke Sports Complex and Arena and the presentation of awards to the winning and runner up teams continued in the Spaniard in Kinsale later that evening.
The return trip will happen next year in Belfast as part of Celebrate Belfast 2006.
