Produced in association with the Irish Examiner the exhibition looks at some of the best examples of sports writing both in Ireland, Britain and the United States. The exhibition features some of the most memorable Irish sporting occasions that includes Roy Keane and Saipan, Sonia O’Sullivan and the World Championship, Stephen Roche winning the Tour de France, a feature on Christy Ring, Munster's famous victory over the All Blacks, George Best and much more. The exhibition includes writings from major sports journalists such as Con Houlihan, Hugh Mc Ilvanney, Tom Humphries, David Walsh and Eamonn Sweeney. The exhibition will also feature a section on ‘sport in literature through the ages’. It is the first exhibition of its kind in Ireland.
The exhibition was opened by Irish Examiner columnist and former Lions player and manager Donal Linehan in the Central Library, Grand Parade. The exhibition will be on display in the Central Library, Grand Parade until the end of the year and will then tour various libraries in Ireland during 2006. As part of the Library programme a major conference on sports writing was organised in association with the Irish Examiner in the Clarion Hotel. Noted journalists participated in a very successful conference which included contributions from Liam Mackey (Irish Examiner), Tom Humphries (Irish Times), Amy Lawerence (Observer), David Walsh (Sunday Times) and John Garrity (Sports Illustrated, USA).
