The inaugural Mary Lougheed Golf Classic was held at Mahon Golf Course on June 30 th. The Classic was organised to commemorate the memory of Mary Lougheed, who was the City Council’s first Director of Services for Housing and Community in the new local authority structure. Mary and her daughter Caoimhe were tragically killed in a car accident on March 31 st, 2002.

The Classic proved a huge success with 55 teams competing on the day. And, on a course which was in superb condition, it was the ladies who showed the way. The all-lady team of Kathleen O’Sullivan, Breda O’Farrell and Finnula McGrath, representing O’Sullivan Estates became the first winners of the “Silver Claret Jug” Perpetual Trophy after some impressive shooting early in the day.

Members of Mary’s family were present on the night for the prize-giving ceremonies, including her husband Des and mother, Lily. The occasion was greatly added to by the attendance of the Lord Mayor, Councillor Deirdre Clune who took time out from her busy schedule to come along and pay her own personal tribute to Mary.

Both in her professional and private lives, Mary had always held great interest in furthering the cause of the disadvantaged. It is appropriate then, that following the impressive support and sponsorship for the event, that it will be two Cork Homeless Charities – Cork Simon and the Good Shepherd Services – which will benefit from the funds raised by the event.

The Organising Committee extend heart-felt thanks to all who participated actively and to all those who contributed generously to the event.

A special mention should go to both Pat Duggan, Corporate Affairs and to Club Captain, Donal Spillane for the great work put in by them in organising the event.

Committee members included Mary’s husband Des Lougheed, City Councils’ Pat Duggan, S.P.O., Corporate Affairs, Paul Moynihan Senior Executive Officer, Housing, Tim Healy, Head of Finance and officers of Mahon Golf Club.
