Civic Reception for Bord na nÓg Teams

 The Lord Mayor Cllr. Donal Counihan with Captains of the teams when he hosted a Civic Reception to honour the four successful teams who represented the County in 2007 – the U14 Footballers in the Tom Power Cup, U15 Footballers in the Jack Mackey Cup & the Humphrey Kelleher Cup, U15 Hurlers in the Ted Hanley Memorial Cup, U16 Footballers in the John O’Donovan Memorial Cup – held in the Council Chamber, City Hall on  26^th February 2008

 2007 was a very successful year for Bord na nÓg Co Chorcaí when teams representing the county won all available competitions in peil and also won the fé 15 iomáint. An impressive and well deserved set of victories and a credit to the players mentors selectors and all involved

 To the uninitiated all of these games are played over one weekend and teams are required to play 4 games over the two day period. There are no gates taken and all expenses are borne by the various bord na nóg. There is a Seanfhocal as Gaeilge  that states “ mol an óige agus tiocfaidh sí ( praise youth and it will blossom is probably the most appropriate translation) and nowhere is this more true than in the field of sport, any sport.

There can be few areas of life where our youth can understand and appreciate the concept of working towards a common goal than in this area and great credit is due to all, particularly the volunteers who make this happen.

The players who make up these squads are drawn from all over Cork city and County and the Bórd have expressed to me how grateful they are to the parents who ferry them to venues for training at some considerable expense and to the many players who make such an effort to bring success to the county.

Who knows but we might be in the company tonight of the people who at some time in the future will bring the Sam Maguire or Liam McCarthy cup (or both) back to leeside at some future date and from what I’ve heard about the talent on display in this year’s competition that is not all as unlikely as it may seem.
