Welcome to the Community and Enterprise Directorate. The Directorate of Community and Enterprise has responsibility for the following functions:
It is primarily concerned with the integration of local public services in order to improve the effectiveness of public service delivery, the avoidance of duplication and the identification of service gaps. Of particular concern is responsiveness to local needs and increased participation by local communities and other stakeholders in policy formulation.
The directorate depends on the co-operation of other directorates/departments within the City Council, other public agencies, community and voluntary organisations and business organisations to achieve its objectives. In this context a variety of projects are being progressed under the Community and Enterprise remit.
These awards continue to recognise groups who, through their commitment to voluntary and community activity have played a significant role in enhancing the quality of life within their communities.
Established as a sub group of the City Development Board, the Cork City Learning Forum is actively engaged in developing the learning culture in the city through a number of successful initiatives.
This volunteer programme delivers the Junior Achievement modules, ‘Our City’, ‘Our Nation’, ‘Our Community’, ‘Our Region’ and for the first time an Irish programme entitled ‘Ár gCathair’, in schools around Cork City.
The improvement of the public realm and physical environment of the city’s northern sector is continuing. As part of the plan, funding was allocated for Car Parking and Tree Planting with a view to facilitating environmental improvements and making areas more attractive for residents and local communities.
Bank Holiday Monday, 4th June 2007, saw Cork City host its first Marathon since 1986 with over 5,000 runners participating on the day. June 2nd 2008 has been officially announced as the date for the next marathon which will incorporate the very successful team relay event and also a wheelchair category.
