Register of Electors

1st September:    Qualifying date for electors

1st November:     Publication of Draft Register

25th November:   Last day for Claims

30th November:   Publication of List of Claims

1st February:        Publication of Register

The register comes into force on the 14th day after publication.  Irish Citizens may vote at every election and referendum.  British Citizens may vote at Dail, European and Local elections.  Other EU Citizens may vote at European and Local Elections.  Non-EU citizens may vote at local elections only.

Special Voters

People who are unable to attend at Polling Stations to vote, are entitled to vote:

  • by post if at home.
  • by special Presiding Officer if in a Nursing Home or Hospital.

The closing date for Registration as a Special Voter is November 25th.

Postal Votes

The categories for voting by post are:

  • Defence Forces
  • Gardaí
  • Civil Servants working abroad
  • Special Voters as above
  • Workers or students away from home and certified by the relevant employer or Educational Institution.  (This is a recent addition to the Categories).
  • Persons unable to vote in person because of the circumstances of their detention in prison pursuant to an Order of a Court.

Supplement

To qualify for entry on the Supplement to the Register of Electors a person must:

  • not be on the Register of Electors anywhere already
  • be 18 years of over by polling day
  • be resident in the city

The closing date for applications is 14 days before an election.

As well as the normal Register a supplement is also available for Postal and Special Voters.  The closing date for these is the Dissolution of the Dail or the making of the Order for a Presidential Election or Referendum.

Facts and Figures

The largest electoral area is the South East with 19,018 electors.  The smallest is the north East with 11,920.  There are 34,559 City Dáil Electors (43%) and 31,770 County Dáil (41%) in the North Central Constituency.  in the South Central Constituency there are 45,509 City electors (57%) and 45,256 County Electors (59%).
