Under the provisions of Part III of the Planning and Development Act 2000 and SI No. 175 of 2003, each of the State’s eight regional authorities is required to prepare and adopt Regional Planning Guidelines (RPGs). The Guidelines are set in the context of the National Spatial Strategy (NSS)1.
In essence, the RPGs for the South West can be viewed as the bridge between national objectives and local plans. And in this regard, the Guidelines build on the work undertaken over the past two years by the City and County Development Boards in the region.
The Regional Planning Guidelines for the South West region have been developed on the strength of guidance provided through the National Spatial Strategy (NSS) and a wide range of existing plans that exist at individual agency level within the region. The task of the Guidelines is to provide a broad canvas to steer the growth and prosperity of the region and its people, over the next sixteen years. The Plan contains statements and analyses of key economic objectives, together with a set of planning guidelines to be incorporated in the development plans of the local authorities in the region.
