Welcome to the Information Systems Department

Head of Information Systems Comments on Plans for the Coming Year 2008

2008 will be primarily a year of consolidation for the IS department.  The 4 year IS strategy has been successfully implemented and a priority for 2008 will be the development of a new IS Strategy.  This typically involves extensive consultation via staff workshops, the Corporate Services Group etc.

At the same time the IS Department, which underwent a restructuring exercise in 2007, will focus on some key fundamentals particularly in the area of security, the introduction of a  new Communications Policy including an extensive training programme for all City Council employees, a new Desktop Policy and a new Geographical Information Strategy.  The new IS Strategy will be developed with these fundamentals acting as inputs to the development process.

2008 will also see the implementation of a new payroll system which replaces the current 25 year old Legacy system and a new time and attendance project. The new payroll project represents one of the highest risk implementations undertaken by the City Council.  The time and attendance system will eventually impact on every staff member of the organisation and will allow significant flexibility for both staff and management in the way the staff time is managed.

Enterprise Resource Planning Team

This section is responsible for providing support for the 350+ users of the Enterprise Resource Planning System as well as supporting multiple integrated ancillary systems.

In 2007 the team was mainly focused on the implementation of a more modern ERP system providing a more user friendly interface, with a mind to current business best practice, in conjunction with the Finance Department.  This implementation encompassed many different strands including managing the redevelopment, testing and deployment of multiple interfaces between ancillary systems and the new ERP platform while ensuring all users were adequately trained for go live.  As an extension of this implementation the team also implemented a new Cash Management System which enables Cork City Council to allow customers to transact all payment transactions in a single location.

Operations Team

The I.S Operations Team is responsible for the full technology infrastructure in Cork City Council.  This covers the procurement, installation, maintenance and security of the full infrastructure network, all servers, PCs, laptops, printers, scanners, and all other peripheral devices.

The Team is responsible for creating and maintaining a safe and secure environment for the operation of all the devices and for implementing a planned maintenance and replacement cycle.

Virus attacks on our systems continue at an increasing rate and all employees need to be vigilant in this regard and to immediately report any instances to the Help Desk.

Major Projects completed during 2007 were:-

  • Move to the new offices of staff PCs and other I.T. equipment
  • Installation of equipment in the Communications Room in the new offices
  • PC Replacement Scheme
  • Continued anti virus updates
  • Security Seminar for all staff

Web Services, GIS and Database Team

The team successfully implemented Site-Manager, a content management application, allowing our user community to update their content on our 11 websites directly. The team also developed two new websites http://www.accesscork.ie/ (a guide to accessible venues) and http://www.corkcitymarathon.ie/.

The Database and GIS element continues the roll out and support of critical applications, particularly in the Housing, Fire, Roads and Planning directorates.  Work also commenced on a GIS Strategy for the City Council covering the period 2007-2010.
