The purpose of the Law Agent’s Office is to provide professional legal services in a manner which is prompt, clear and technically correct and which is both practical and cost effective and which supports the mission and strategic objectives of Cork City Council.

The Law Agent and her department work in collaboration with the City Council departments in ensuring that at all times the practice of the law is observed.
The Office is engaged in a wide area of professional legal services for the City Council. These include:
The Law Agent's Office conducts a vast proportion of its dealings internally, as opposed to direct dealings with the public. There are, however, certain aspects of the Law Agent's Office work which requires direct interaction between officials and the public at large.
The Law Agents Office deals with all aspects of conveyancing of property in conjunction with the Property Department; it certifies titles for housing loans for the Housing Department; it engages in debt collection for the Rates Department; it prosecutes violations of planning law for the Planning Department and also defends court actions against the City Council and its officials. It assists the City Council in its ongoing efforts to eradicate dereliction and stimulate productive development, while ensuring that the resulting developments is sensitive to planning concerns and adheres to the stringent requirements of Environmental Law. In this regard, the Law Agent's Office advises the City Council in the exercise of its powers under the Derelict Sites Act, 1990, while assisting in the Enforcement of planning requirements.
Property transactions play a major role in the Law Agent's Office activities. Other areas of activity include advising the Housing Department about its obligations under housing legislation. The Law Agent's Office is also engaged in litigation in the District Court, the Circuit Court, the High Court and the Supreme Court. The Litigation involves everything from traffic violations to fundamental issues concerning the powers of the City Council.
The Law Agent's Office makes legal submissions on behalf of the City Council to Central Government Departments and appears on behalf of the City Council at Enquiries, Arbitrations and Tribunals.
