Family Fun Day Days

A number of Family Fun Days are held in Cork City parks throughout the Summer, they are organised and funded by the Recreation, Amenity and Culture Dept. in association with local community groups and volunteers. The three fun days this Summer will be/have been held in Mahon, Togher and the Glen. Fun Days in past years have taken place in Ballyphehane, Knocknaheeny and Gurranbraher.

On Saturday, June 17th, the second Loughmahon Family Fun day was held in Loughmahon Park, Mahon. The event was officially opened by Former Lord Mayor Cllr. Deirdre Clune and was a great success, hundreds of locals came out to enjoy ‘the fun in the sun’. Events and activities included African drumming workshops, face painting, puppet making workshops and circus skill workshops. Basket ball skills and soccer drills were held in the new MUGA (Multi-Usage Games Area), while boxing displays and gymnastic demonstrations were given by local club members. Fun games were held for tiny tots and musical performances were given by local performers.

Cork Sportsability Day

Co. Cork Sports Partnership in association with Cork City Council’s RAC Dept, HSE’s Health Promotion Dept, Irish Wheelchair Sports, Special Olympics Munster, Cerebral Palsy Sport, Blindsports, Cork Special Schools and COPE Foundation hosted Cork’s first ‘Sportsability Day’ at the Cork Institute of Technology and Leisureworld, Bishopstown on Saturday, March 25th.

The aim of this event was to promote opportunities for people with disabilities in Cork to become involved in sport, recreation and physical activity and to provide an opportunity for people with a disability to give their opinion about the future of sport in Cork. Lagan To The Lee Sports Challenge

November 2005 saw the Cork leg of the ‘Lagan to the Lee Sports Challenge’ take place in the Mardyke Sports Complex and Arena, where a number of sports groups from Cork competed against their Belfast counterparts in rugby, ladies soccer, 5-aside soccer and hurling. A composite rugby team from Midleton, hurling team from St. Finbarrs Hurling and Football Club, Mallow COPE Foundation’s Special Olympics 5-aside soccer team and Lakewood Ranger’s ladies soccer team represented Cork in this weekend event. Awards were presented by Former Deputy Lord Mayor Cllr. Dara Murphy to the winning and runner-up teams at a social evening in Kinsale later that night. On the overall scale Cork drew in the hurling and Belfast took the victory in the rugby, ladies soccer and Special Olympics 5-aside soccer. The return trip will be made to Belfast on the weekend of October 20th – 22nd in conjunction with Celebrate Belfast 2006.

In addition to this, 14 Cork swimmers travelled to Belfast on June 19th, to compete in the Carrick Fergus open water race where they were received very well by their Belfast colleagues. On July 22nd, a group of Belfast swimmers will make the return visit to compete in the ‘Vibes & Scribes’ Lee Swim 2006. For more information on this year’s Lee Swim check out www.corkmasters.ie

Schools And Youth Clubs ‘Introduction To Orienteering’

Following on from a successful number of introductory sessions to orienteering in the Glen Amenity Park- Cork City Council’s first permanent orienteering course, an additional three courses have been marked out for use by the general public, schools, youth groups, clubs etc. in the City. Information packs and maps are available free of charge from the Recreation, Amenity and Culture Dept. For further information or to receive maps contact 021-4924741. The three additional locations are Clashduv Park, Togher, Murphys Farm, Bishopstown and The Marina.

J4 Volleyball Training Course

On Tuesday, May 16th, a group of youth workers working in Cork City attended a J4 volleyball training course in the Glen Resource and Sports Centre. The course was given by Ciara Buckley, Munster Volleyball Development Officer. By request, additional courses can be arranged. Emergency Care In Sport Courses

On the weekends of May 5th – 7th and May 26th-28th, two well attended ‘Emergency Care in Sport ‘courses were held in the Cork University Hospital by the Academy of Emergency Care in Sport in association with Cork City Council’s RAC Dept.

The emphasis of this course relates to potential incidents and challenges in sporting environments. These include land and water based, low and medium altitude, indoor and outdoor, natural and synthetic, formal and informal environments. The target participants are anyone with the responsibility for providing immediate “emergency care” at any sporting event or training. Courses are provided by Paul Allan, Director of Training with the Academy and Senior International Sports Coach.

Cork City Sports Forum

A number of well attended sports forums have been held by Cork City Council’s RAC Dept. in the past. All sports clubs in Cork City are invited to attend. Watch this page for the date and venue of the next sports forum.
