European Projects

Participating in European Projects

Various financial instruments have been implemented in order to stimulate research and innovation in a European context as well as to facilitate co-operation between transportation stakeholders through European Projects, whose advantages are knowledge and know-how sharing, productive scientific and commercial partnerships, enhanced mobility between countries and introduction of best practices at the pan-European level. They also offer a secure budget by granting important subsidies to the involved partners.

Cork City Council, Traffic Division has been involved for many years in various trans-national projects, e.g. in the framework of INTERREG, FP5, FP6 and IEE instruments. Several services or projects like Black Ash Park and Ride, park by phone, bio-fuelled vehicles or Local Community Bus on Demand have been strongly supported in that way.

Cork City Council is also a member of the CIVITAS Initiative, a European network of cities involved in experimentation and experience-sharing to face crucial transportation issues.

Cork City Council through the Traffic Division was a partner in this project with the cities of Rome, Barcelona and Winchester.

The activities undertaken by Cork City Council under the CIVITAS initiative were:

  • Introduction of the Black Ash Park and Ride facility;
  • Use of retractable bollards to prohibit vehicles from city centre side streets;
  • Introduction of the innovative Park by Phone system;
  • Provision of elements for a general freight management plan;
  • Promotion of lift-sharing and other soft transport modes amongst Cork City Council employees;
  • Improvements in the extent of the cycleways network;
  • Conversion of some Cork City Council owned vehicles to run on bio-fuels (vegetable oil).

MASCARA European Project (2004-2007)

Cork City Council, Traffic Division is the leader partner of the MASCARA European Project (West INTERREG IIIC) which focuses on the implementation of innovative Demand Responsive Transport (DRT) services and their impacts on social inclusion.

Cork’s contribution to the MASCARA Project (Demand Responsive Transport Service for Increasing Social Cohesion in Urban / Rural Areas) is the feasibility study on setting up of a Local Community Bus on Demand in the North-Western sector of Cork City (see also our related page) where existing bus services do not meet all the mobility needs of the residents.

The successful and highly productive Conference “DRT: Good 2 Go”, launched by Minister of State in the Department of Transport, was held in Cork on 8th and 9th February 2007. Almost on hundred delegates and speakers came together from all corners of Europe and Ireland to discuss operational and technical issues and participate in interactive workshops on DRT.
