Cork City Council, Traffic Division is proud to announce the imminent arrival in Cork of GoCar, the first Irish car-sharing club of its generation.
Following the feasibility study undertaken last year and the successful public conference organised at the Imperial Hotel in September 2007 during European Mobility Week, GoCar will finally be established and available for Cork dwellers in July 2008.
Car-sharing in urban areas is a cost-effective alternative to owning your own car. It allows people access to a car when they need it, from a place near their home or workplace. The car can be used for short trips lasting as little as an hour or booked for a few days. You only pay for the hours you keep the car and the distance you drive.
Car-sharing clubs have been successfully implemented in various European countries such as Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Italy and Britain. They are known as “car clubs” in the UK and “car-sharing services” or simply “car-sharing” in continental Europe.
Mendes GoCar Limited, a small Irish consultancy specialising in sustainable and accessible local passenger transport operations, research and training, is in the process of setting up a national CarSharing service under the name GoCar.
Mendes GoCar Limited offered to implement CarSharing in Cork and the City Council has agreed to this offer. The city of Cork will be the first location in Ireland where GoCar will be established, starting in July 2008.
GoCar is being implemented in partnership with cambio CarSharing, which operates and supports CarSharing in nine German and 13 Belgian cities and has nearly 20 years experience of CarSharing.
The initial GoCar fleet consists of 8 vehicles, 6 Ford Fiestas, 1 Ford Focus and 1 Ford Transit Connect van. They will be spread across 3 GoBases (dedicated parking stations) near City Hall (Anglesea Street), near UCC (College View) and by Clark’s Bridge (Wandesford Quay).
