Cork City Council is the first Local Authority to place Graduates through the Fás Graduate Work Placement Programme. This programme has been deemed to be a great success mutually benefitting both the Participants and the Council .Cork City Council continues to offer further placements to Graduates under the Fás Work Placement Programme following its successful introduction in June 2010.

Cork City has recruited and is currently giving valuable work experience in relevant fields to 19 qualified Graduates. The Council has approval to fill 25 such placements, which is the maximum number allowable through the Fás Work Placement Programme, and will reach that total in the coming months.

The Council are providing placements in the areas of Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Business Administration, Architecture, Environmental and Civil Technicians, Information Technology, Archaeology and Accountancy. The participants are very positive about the benefits of the WPP with Cork City Council. Their comments include:

“While on the FAS work placement I have gained highly relevant experience in my field, as well as valuable insight into public sector mechanisms.  The work I am assigned is both instructive and challenging, and my supervisor and colleagues provide consistent support and guidance.”

“I am enjoying the challenge of working in such an active workplace. My experiences here will hopefully serve me well in the future. I have been made to feel a member of the team. Overall an enjoyable and fulfilling experience. I would highly recommend the programme to anyone considering applying”.

“As it is my first real work experience in relation to my qualifications, it has brought me on in leaps and bounds mentally in relation to the real working world. It has already started to benefit me on a competency level and also has improved my listening and concentration abilities. The work is interesting and the working environment is amazing. I’ve settled in quite well to be honest, as I have been getting on with everyone here since I started. Most importantly of all, it has given me a real sense of purpose”

“I am very happy with the Fás Work Placement Programme at Cork City Council.  It is offering me invaluable experience and also giving me the opportunity to continue to practise my qualification and keep my engineering skills fresh and up to date in the workplace”

“The most important factor for me with the Fás Work Placement Programme is that you keep your career skills alive. In the event that an opportunity might arise it is extremely important that you are working in that field.  It also shows to employers that you are willing to work.I have got the opportunity to experience working in a different department within the Local Authority and undertake a course in Managing Safety for Construction Managers which I found extremely beneficial for continuous professional development.”

Cork City Council are very enthusiastic about the Work Placement Programme and are eager to ensure that the participants gain as much quality work experience and skills as possible from their time with Cork City Council.  Everything possible is being done by the Council to support and accommodate participants in their effort to gain employment while on the programme which has seen 3 Graduates secure paid employment so far.

“The Council is very pleased to participate in the scheme and we all benefit from the inputs of Graduates” said City Manager Tim Lucey.

Our first intake of Graduates are due to complete their placements in June.  We will be advertising on the Fás website to provide more placements for Graduates shortly.
