Local Area Plans

Local area plans, (LAPs) are prepared in accordance with Part II, Section 20 of the Planning & Development Acts 2000 - 2006 and are required to be consistent with the objectives of the Cork City Development Plan 2009-2015. LAPs consist of a written statement and plans indicating detailed objectives, including community facilities, amenities and design standards. 

LAPs are prepared for areas that require economic, physical and social renewal, and/or areas likely to be subject to large scale development within the lifetime of the development plan. This includes Cork’s ‘Major Development Areas’ of Docklands, Blackpool and Mahon. 

In preparing a LAP, the planning authority shall consult statutory bodies, the local community and local stakeholders including local residents, community groups and commercial & business interests.  

It is a reserved function of the elected member of the Council to make, amend or revoke a local area plan based on the issues raised during public consultation and the recommendations of the City Manager, taking account of the proper planning and sustainable development of the area. 

Local Area Plans must be consistent with the objectives set out in the development plan, and often result in variations of the development plan to ensure that objectives are consistent.

The following statutory Local Area Plans are adopted:

• North Docks Local Area Plan 2005
• South Docks Local Area Plan 2008
• Farranferris Local Area Plan 2009
• North Blackpool Local Area Plan
