ALLOTMENTS      

Cork City Council recognises the benefits of allotments as being: 

• Growing safe and healthy , fresh fruit and vegetables locally;
• Activity that enhances peoples physical and mental wellbeing;
• Protecting and enhancing local biodiversity;
• Improving local neighbourhood amenity;
• Providing opportunities for lifelong learning;
• Encouraging interaction between ages, ethnicities and culture.

      In 2010 a site at St. Colmcille Road, Churchfield, was chosen as the first Cork City Council allotment garden.  Work began with a view to having it up and running by the start of the 2011 growing season.

It was set out in 46 plots of 100 square meters each, and two community/school gardens.  There are water and power supplies on site, sheds for tools, a canteen, and security measures to discourage vandalism.  The project has proved very popular with the public. 

 The site was officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Councillor Michael O’Connell, on the 22^nd  of June 2011. 

Rental agreements are issued between October and December, with a view to having growers in place for February. Anyone interested in renting a plot should write to Parks Section, Recreation, Amenity & Emergency Services Directorate, Cork City Council, City Hall, Cork, or Email: recreation@corkcity.ie.  However, it must be noted that there is a long waiting list of interested applicants at present.
