About Us

Cork City Council is the local authority entrusted with the municipal administration of Cork City. Its history can be traced back over hundreds of years. In fact, the council’s first charter was granted in the year 1185 at a time when Ireland was under Norman rule.

The Council takes the lead in Cork City’s civic life and is responsible for a diverse range of essential services including Housing, Roads, Transport, Recreation, Urban Planning, Environmental Services (Water, Drainage and Waste) and Community Supports.

Quality of environment and quality of life are primary concerns; and the council often works side by side with other organisations, both public and private, in pursuit of these important goals.

If you have an interest in Cork City, whether it’s as an investor, a visitor or as a foreign national working in the area for the first time, Cork City Council will be delighted to help in any way it can. Perhaps we can steer you towards the information you’ll need or put you in touch with someone who can offer advice. Either way, if you’re living in Cork or even just visiting, Cork City Council is here to ensure that time spent in Cork, is time well spent.
