City Strategy

European Capital of Culture

Against very stiff competition, Cork was successful in its bid to become European Capital of Culture in 2005.

This event was especially important for Cork; a city that sees innovation and creativity as central to its economic future. The city raised a proud torch for arts and culture on Ireland's behalf. But of course, Cork's responsibility stretched well beyond its own national borders. It became a catalyst for cultural exhange between member states and a showcase for all forms of artistic expression in the newly expanded union.

European artists and performers visited the Capital of Culture to exchange ideas, seek inspiration and express their unique cultural identities. Together, they left an artistic footprint that remains long after the cultural torch passed to another city.
