During 1991 Council approved the twinning of Cork City with the city of Swansea in Wales www.swansea.gov.uk. The formal Swansea twinning ceremonies took place in 1992 and the formal Cork twinning ceremony took place in September 1994 with signatories Lord Mayor of Cork Councillor Tim Falvey and the Lord Mayor of Swansea, Bob Davis.
Because of the close cultural ties between the two cities the City Council endeavours each year to promote these ties. Recently the City Council supported exchange visits between Irish and Welsh writers who shared their experiences, identified core characteristics and read their work for members of the public.
Sporting organisations are also encouraged to develop links through the provision of contacts and assistance.
